1973 Rochdale Motorcade

This was the last of the Rochdale Motorcades organised by Transiclub of Rochdale (which by this time had merged with the Crossley Omnibus Society). It also co-incided with local government re-organisation and as a result a special effort was made to obtain municipal vehicles from all the local councils.

One of the films used ended up over-developed and as a result the negatives are dense and a bit grainy. Consequently I never printed them and they are only now being seen for the first time.

Plumtree - an early attempt at a transport museum

The East Midlands Transport Society leased the goods yard of the former Plumtree station (south east of Nottingham) in the 1960s with the intention of establishing a transport museum there.

Limitations of the site saw the project eventually fail and most of the trolleybuses went to Sandtoft.

It would have been an interesting venue as immediately adjacent is the old BR Research test track (now an Alstom test track) and visitors to the museum would have been able to see the prototype APT on high-speed test and more recently the Virgin Pendolino fleet.

Stanford Hall Rally, 10th September 1967

This was a very early rally to have a sizeable bus content and was reported on in the November 1967 issue of BUSES, which featured an almost-new Southdown PD3 on the cover! To put it in more precise historical context, Derby trolleybuses finished the day before the rally and Samuel Ledgard's still had another month to run before being swallowed by West Yorkshire.

It is quite remarkable how far vehicles travelled to this event, which was organised by the HCVC. A total of twenty-four vehicles took part, most of which are illustrated here. This gives a good snapshot of the bus preservation movement at this time when it was just starting to gain momentum.

These are more pictures taken with an Instamatic (126) format camera, which was not of brilliant optical quality. The film iteslf was also usually poor quality but not so with colour slides. I didn't take any of these shots and cannot therefore always be specific on dates and locations - I welcome feedback.
